LMN Research focus

Nanoscience and basic research on properties of correlated nanostructures on surfaces: Development of new experimental methods, instrumentation and devices... Application-oriented research in nanofabrication and polymer nanotechnology.
Germanium/silicon-nanostructure etched silicon structure embossed wafer

Investigating optic, elec-
tronic, magnetic and chemical properties of nanoscale molecular assemblies, quantum dots and magnetic elements on surfaces by exploiting the unique possibilities of PSI's large scale experimental facilities and specialized nanofabrication technologies available at LMN.

... to strengthen PSI's large scale facilities. Developing new techniques and components in x-ray microscopy and holographic imaging, for innovative detectors for x-rays or particles, for field emitters for high brightness cathodes and other emerging projects. Investigating properties of topographically or chemically nanopatterned surfaces, developing the necessary manufacturing processes in direct collaboration with engineers (INKA) and industrial partners and transferring the results into applications.

Topical Interest

Scientists at the Paul Scherrer Institute and Uni Bern have successfully generated 5 pC electron pulses from a metallic nano-tip array cathode by femtosecond near infrared laser-induced field emission. The obtained charge, corresponding to ~10^7 electrons, is within a factor of two of
the required bunch charge for the low-charge operation mode of the SwissFEL X-ray free-electron laser, demonstrating the feasibility of metallic field emitter array cathodes for high-charge short-pulse electron source applications.
